Key Text: When all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord, saying, for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever (2 Chronicles 7:3).
The Chronicler now gives an account of Solomon’s dedication of the Temple
built at Jerusalem in mount Moriah. It is where Abraham was instructed to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice on one of the Mountains of Moriah and it is the very site where God demonstrated His presence to David by igniting his burnt offering with fire from heaven in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. Upon completion of the Temple, Solomon had all the elders of Israel and tribal leaders assemble at Jerusalem for the dedication. The ark was transferred from its temporary tent in Jerusalem to its permanent location, the Most Holy Place. All of the 120 priests were sounding the trumpets, all the Levites, and all the singers were present and singing. While their praise was ascending, the glory of the Lord descended and filled the house of God. Solomon gave a testimony to the faithfulness of God before offering his prayer of dedication. The conclusion of Solomon’s prayer was climaxed when fire came down from heaven v 1, an immediate divine response.
Since the glory of the Lord filled the Temple, the priests could not enter v 3. “Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the Lord. And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep: so the king all the people dedicated the house of God” vv 4-5. Three types of offerings are noted: Burnt offerings characterized by being totally consumed by fire, meat offerings which stands for any food or grain, and peach offerings of thanksgiving connected with the taking of vows. “Thus Solomon finished the house of the Lord, and the king’s house: and all that came into Solomon’s heart to make in the house of the Lord, and in his own house, he prosperously effected v 11. AMEN!
