Sunday School Lesson 5: Sin and Forgiveness, 1 John 1:5-10, 1 John 2:1-6, January 4, 2026,

Key Text: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:8-9).

Without Jesus, we are separated from God, drawn toward rebellion against Him, and ruled by selfishness.  We stumble in spiritual darkness, following a path that may seem right and logical but leads to destruction (Proverbs 14:12).  When we accept Christ as our Savior, the old habits are to be put to death.  We are born again into a vibrant relationship with the living God.  The Holy Spirit draws us into friendship with Jesus who rules our hearts, directs our steps, and floods our lives with the light of His truth. He rescues us from destruction, frees us from sin, and leads us to eternal life.

This lesson starts with a litmus test of a genuine relationship with Christ:  Since God is light, we can not come to Him without forsaking darkness v 6.  Those who truly belong to God will seek the light of His truth, pursue His righteousness, and reach out to others with His loving compassion.  This means taking on a new identity.  We no longer belong to the world. We have been born into the family of God, a fellowship of imperfect people bound together and cleansed by the perfect sacrifice of Jesus’ blood v 7.  We become part of Christ’s eternal kingdom.  John says if we walk in the light as Jesus is in the light, we will have fellowship with one another.  Our mutual passion for Jesus binds our hearts together in love and unity, both now and in eternity.  Christians encounter problems in their relationships with others because we are flawed individuals, we have sinned, and we are prone to sin.  John is reminding us to be honest about our spiritual weakness v 9.  “If we confess our sins, God will forgive us, cleanse us, and bring us into a right relationship with Him.”  If we claim to be perfect, our actions soon prove us to be dishonest v 8.  Such a claim contradicts God’s description of our profound spiritual need v10.  Just as sin is universal, affecting all of humanity, it is important to keep in view that the remedy is extended to all (1John 2:2) because all are precious to Him.

John continues to give a litmus test of evidence of genuine relationship with God:  The evidence that a person really knows God is found in changed lives.  True faith changes conduct.  The person who claims to know God but fails to obey His commands is lying about his/her faith.  Obedience is the true test of sincere faith.  Our relationship with Him must be rooted in love and this matures as we obey the Word.   Jesus modeled selfless service, and humility.  He is committed to the Father and His kingdom, and He has a firm rejection of all sin.  Therefore we must strive for the same virtues.  WALK AS JESUS WALKED!  AMEN!
